BACKHOUSE - On March 10 1944, at the Rectory, Radcliffe, CONSTANCE MARY MARGARET; the beloved wife of the Rev. T. BACKHOUSE, after a long and painful illness, borne with Christian patience and fortitude. Service followed by internment at Radcliffe Parish Church on Tuesday, March 14 at 2.30pm

RADCLIFE TIMES, SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 1944
OBITUARY.
Mrs. Backhouse, Wife of Rector of Radcliffe.
With regret we announce the death, which .occurred yesterday- week at the Rectory, Bury-road, Radcliffe, following a long illness, of Mrs. Constance Mary Margaret Backhouse, wife of the Rev. T. Backhouse. She was 58 years of age.
Mrs. Backhouse came to Radcliffe from from Horwich in 1936, when her husband was appointed Rector in succession to the late Rev. J. Bamber. She was interested in all sections of Church work, in particular the Mothers’ Union, a branch of which she had formed at Horwich. Mr. Backhouse had been vicar of Horwich since November, 1927, and prior to that was vicar of the daughter church of St. Catherine.
In Radcliffe Mrs. Backhouse gained many friends. The deep regard in which she was held throughout the parish increased as time went by. To the Mothers’ Union, of which she acted as enrolling member, she gave much devoted service, and its members are among the many who deplore her death
Between periods of sickness she participated in several of the in town’s public activities. She was a member of the Mayor’s War Comforts Fund, and when health permitted was on the welfare rota at Close Park.
Mrs. Backhouse comes from an historic Somerset family of the name of Winter. She was daughter of the late Mr. William Arthur Winter, of Yatton, “a fine old English gentleman,” and cricketer-colleague of the renowned Dr. W G Grace. He died twelve years ago [1932].
One of her ancestors was Admiral Sir William Wynter who led a section of the British fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588. She had traced back the ancestral line even further—to Sir Lewis de Winter, “a Norman born at Rouen, who came over with William, Duke of Normandy,” and fought at Hastings (1066).

Mrs. Backhouse spent a great deal of time exploring the genealogy of her family, and in the course of diligent research she had accumulated much data and a few very valuable portraits of some of her ancestors.

Shortly, a full account of the Winters may be published. Unfortunately, Mrs. Backhouse has not lived to see realised what must have been one of her uppermost desires. Two of the best known surviving members of the Winter family are General Sir Ormonde Winter, and Dr. William Essex Winter, late of Middlesex Hospital, London.

Mrs. Backhouse, as a nurse, served during the last war with the Queen Alexandra Imperial Nursing Reserve. The Rector also saw service in the war as a chaplain, and it was at a hospital in Italy that they first met.
In the early days of the present war, Mrs. Backhouse was among those who volunteered for nursing service, should the blitzes occur. She was also a member of the Manchester Diocesan committee interested in the spiritual welfare of nurses.

Radcliffe Parish Church Magazine
APRIL, 1944.

Nor can I close this letter without a word concerning my own personal sorrow and loss. Several times during recent months I have noted in the magazine that my dear wife and I thanked the people of the parish and especially members of the congregation and friends for their kindness and sympathy with us during her illness. It was a very great comfort to her and to me to feel the love and affectionate concern of so many. She oftentimes expressed her gratitude and hoped to be able in some small measure when she recovered to show it. But that was not to be, and so after many days of suffering, with an undimmed hope and unshakeable faith, a life which seemed to human understanding capable of many years of useful service slowly drew to its close. Peacefully she passed into the nearer presence of God at 4a.m. on March 10th [1944]. My boy, my sister, Mrs Winter, and I feel we would like to say again “Thank you for your help and love at this very solemn hour of our lives.”
I should be failing in my duty if I did not thank Canon Kershaw, Canon Worsley and Mr Makin for relieving me of so many Church duties and responsibilities during these past weeks, Never shall I forget their kindness and their help. Mr. Makin particularly shouldered a heavy burden and carried it magnificently.

I wish also to pay my tribute to the doctors and Nurses who for so long attended my dear wife. Dr. Kenny and Dr. Simpson gave their devoted care and attention and if medical knowledge and skill could have saved her she would still be here. They gave themselves devotedly to her, sparing nothing and what more could anyone do? She herself expressed her gratitude to them more than once and they both knew they had a patient who valued beyond words their help.

Nurse Whelan and Nurse Glover of the Radcliffe District Nursing Association regularly attended her; Their gentleness and care, when she herself was helpless, were of the utmost aid. We could not have carried on without their assistance. They adorn their profession and I trust that if ever they come to an hour of such need they will find someone to minister to them as they did to my dear wife. . Amidst all her suffering and pain she remained the same person you all knew—calm, quiet, peaceful. Now I believe her tired body is at rest and her soul is at peace. I pray that light perpetual may shine upon her and that I and others may be inspired in days to come by her example. We at the Rectory thank you all, for your sympathy, love and prayers.

“Brethren, pray for us.”
Yours affectionately, .
T. BACKHOUSE.
