ST. EDWARD'S v. O.S.E.
Played at St. Edward's on Saturday, Nov. 24th.

The afternoon was misty and the wet grass made the ball extremely slippery to handle. The O.S.E. kicked off first, and it was not long before the School forwards scored in a heap by pushing over the line and touching down. The kick failed. After this the O.S.E. pressed for some time, and the School saved by touching down. From the 'twenty-five ' Paton dropped out on the unexpected side; Stagg picked up and ran to within ten yards of the O.S.E. line. The School now pressed; but in an O.S.E. forward rush Thompson broke a bone in his leg, and for the rest of the game the O.S.E. played with fourteen men. There was no further score in the remainder of the first half. Play was even, both sides attacking in turn.
The O.S.E. started the second half by pressing at once, but Paton relieved pressure with long kicks to touch and the School forwards on several occasions turned defence into attack by good rushes. Cooke took the ball up to the O.S.E. line with a run from the half-way line, and for a time the School pressed. They nearly scored from a clever three-quarter movement; but the O.S.E. more than held their own until a few minutes before no-side,' when Cooke scored from what was the best three-quarter movement of the match. This try was not converted, and though the O.S.E. attacked in the remaining few minutes there was no further score.
The match was chiefly a forwards' game. The School forwards not only dribbled well, but also made one or two good passing bursts. The School three-quarters were heavily marked and found it difficult to break through individually. In the last ten minutes there were two really good movements, and the extreme slipperiness of the ball made these all the more creditable. A feature of the game was Paton's long kicking to touch. Considering the conditions and the strength of the O.S.E. side, the School did remarkably well. The backs were always busy and trying clever movements, and the forwards definitely got the better of the strong pack against them. Teams :-
