Backhouse/Wynter/Gratze

GERALD MERRETT WYNTER, youngest son of the late Dr. Andrew Wynter, was born on the 20th January, 1864. He began his engineering training as a pupil of Mr. S. W. Jenkin, of Liskeard, Cornwall, with whom he subsequently remained as an Assistant on the construction of the Helston Railway, Ncwquay Waterworks, and Redruth Drainage. From 1886 to 1889 he was engaged in Sweden and Norway, as a District Engineer, on the construction of the railway from Lu]ea to Gellivara, and from 1890 to 1893 he was similarly occupied on the construction of the Manila Railway. Returning to England, he was engaged for nearly four years in connection with the Newport, Gadshill and St. Lawrence Railway in the Isle of Wight, and in the autumn of 1897 he went to British Guiana to take up work on the extension of the Demerara Railway to New Amsterdam. There be remained until the summer of 1899, when he again came home, and in the following autumn proceeded to Egypt on Sir John Aird's staff for the construction of the Nile Dam. In October, 1900, he joined a special survey party to locate the extension of the Gold Coast Railway—already completed from Secondee to Tarkwa—to Coomassie. On the completion of this work he returned to England, unfortunately suffering from abscess of the liver, from which he died at 30 Upper Berkeley Street, London, on the 14th August, 1001.
Mr. Wynter was elected an Associate Member of the Institution on the 3rd December, 1889.
